88 |Driving dynamics/brakes All-wheel steering enhances handling and driving comfort with additional rear axle steerability. In a low speed range, this gives the vehicle high agility and manoeuvrability. The steering angle of the rear axle is in opposition to that of the front axle, which reduces the turning circle and the driving path width. In the upper speed range, steering in the same direction improves responsiveness while increasing the driving dynamics and vehicle stability. The all-wheel steering supports the parking and manoeuvring operations carried out by the park assist and the trailer assistant. Overall, the all-wheel steering allows easy manoeuvring, sporty driving behaviour and superb, comfortable steering behaviour. Electronic Stabilisation Control (ESC) The brake control system’s basic functions ABS, EBV, ESC, ASR and EDS provide high stability and increased traction by means of situation-dependent intervention in the engine management system and the vehicle braking system. The adaptive ABS uses offroad detection to optimise the braking performance depending on the driving surface. ESC offroad mode provides for increased traction and optimised stabilisation. The HDC supports the driver during critical downhill drives. The system automatically detects mounted roof racks and adjusts the ESC functions accordingly. All delay, stop and parking commands of the assistance systems are centrally coordinated and executed in the brake control system. Recuperation economises on fuel through brake energy recovery; kinetic energy is converted into usable electrical energy by increasing the generator voltage when the vehicle is coasting or braking and relieving the generator during subsequent acceleration Start-stop system helps to reduce fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions by automatically switching off the engine when the vehicle is stationary, e.g. at traffic lights.
