Žirje je najudaljeniji i najveći otok šibenskog arhipelaga. Naseljen je već od antičkih vremena o kojima svjedoči i vojna utvrda podignuta još u 6. stoljeću. Njeni dobro očuvani ostaci protežu se na Gradini iznad luke Velika Stupica. Otok je nekoć bio pokriven gustom hrastovom šumom pa se pretpostavlja da mu od tud potječe i ime. Njegova bogato razvijena obala krije mnoge zaklonjene uvale, manje otočiće i hridi, a ljubitelji pre- krasne prirode uživaju i u kristalno čistom moru. S kopnom je povezan redovitim brodskim linijama, a i nautičarima je omilje- na destinacija. Stanovništvo, s bogatom pomorskom tradicijom, također se bavi poljodjelstvom i ribarstvom, a smještaj je moguć među privatnim iznajmljivačima. Žirje ist die äußerste und die größte Insel des Šibeniker Ar- chipels. Sie ist bereits seit antiker Zeit bewohnt, wovon auch die Militärfestung aus dem 6. Jahrhundert zeugt. Ihre gut erhalte- nen Reste sind Teil der Burgruine (Gradina) oberhalb des Hafens Velika Stupica. Die Insel war einst von einemdichten Eichenwald bedeckt, dem sie vermutlich auch ihren Namen verdankt. Ihre reich gegliederte Küste birgt zahlreiche versteckte Buchten, klei- nere Inseln und Felsen, und die Liebhaber der herrlichen Natur genießen auch das kristallklare Meerwasser. Mit dem Festland ist die Insel durch regelmäßige Schiffslinien verbunden, und sie ist ein beliebtes Ziel für Nautiker. Die Bevölkerung, die auf eine reiche maritime Tradition zurückblickt, betreibt heute Ackerbau und Fischfang. Unterkunft findet man bei privaten Vermietern. Žirje is the largest and most remote island in the Šibenik archipelago, and has been inhabited since ancient times. The military fort dating back to the 6th century testifies to this, and its well preserved ruins stretch along Gradina above the port of Velika Stupica. As the island used to be covered in dense oak for- ests, it is assumed that this is how it got its name (žir – acorn ). Its well-indented coastline hides many secluded coves, islets and reefs, while nature lovers will enjoy its crystal clear waters. The island is connected to the mainland by regular boat lines, and is a favourite destination for sailors. The locals, who have a rich sailing tradition, are also engaged in farming and fishing, and they offer accommodation in private homes. Žirje è l’isola più lontana e più grande dell’arcipelago di Sebenico. Era abitata già in epoca antica, come testimonia un forte militare eretto nel VI secolo ed i cui resti ben conservati oggi s’estendono sulla Gradina sopra il porto di Velika Stupica. Un tempo l’isola era ricoperta da una fitta foresta di lecci, a cui probabilmente deve il proprio nome (žir = ghianda). La sua co- sta, ricca e frastagliata, cela molte insenature riparate, piccoli isolotti e scogli ed un mare limpido e cristallino, per il piacere dei veri amanti della natura. Žirje è collegata alla terraferma tra- mite linee marittime regolari ed è amatissima dai diportisti. Gli abitanti, oltre a vantare una ricca tradizione marinara, si occupa- no anche d’agricoltura e pesca. Sull’isola è possibile alloggiare in camere ed appartamenti in affitto. HR DE EN IT
